Location

Where do I find which shelf mark and which location?

At Dortmund University Library, most books are on open access. At the Central Library, books are arranged by subject (e.g. mathematics, economics, ...). Every subject has a shelf mark.

The books in each subject are shelved by order of accession. If you are looking for a specific book, you should therefore not look at the shelves, but you need to know its shelf mark, which you can find out in our catalogue.

In the Departmental Libraries, however, books are shelved in a classified arrangement. The classification schemes can be found on the websites of the respective Departmental Library.

After searching something in our catalogue, you will get a short hit list with different items or a full display of a single item. By clicking on the respective item you can find out shelf marks and locations. Look at "Holdings" to see loan status and branch where the item is located, too.

Our location guide links you to a map of the Central Library and of the Emil-Figge-Bibliothek. If the book is at another Departmental Library, the location guide will link you to the website of the respective Departmental Library.

Where do I find journals?

Our print journals can be found in the Central Library and in the Departmental Libraries. Journals may not be borrowed.

Our electronic journals can be found in our catalogue or in the electronic journals library (EZB).

Central Library

Individual issues of the current volume can be found in the journals reading room on the ground floor of the Central Library. The journals are shelved alphabetically there. The current issues are on the hinged lid, the older ones behind it.

Some of the current issues are only available at the reference desk on the second floor if you leave your library card as a security.

Older volumes can be found under their shelf mark on basement level 1 or 2. The shelf mark can be found out in our catalogue.

Departmental Libraries

In most Departmental Libraries, the issues of the current volume are shelved alphabetically. The older volumes are also shelved alphabetically and do not have a specific shelf mark.
